Application guideline for the 16th Nakasone Yasuhiro Award

Nakasone Peace Institute (NPI) established the Nakasone Yasuhiro Award to encourage and recognize outstanding achievements conducted internationally by the younger generation in political, economic, cultural, and other fields. Applications are welcome according to the conditions below.

Application guideline


Candidates with demonstrated exemplary research or activity in the following fields are encouraged to apply.

  1. Enhancing peace and security in the international community
  2. Promotion of international economic development and cooperation
  3. Activities to support international exchange in culture and arts as well as cultural cooperation
  4. International joint research and international collaboration in the fields of science and technology.
  5. Efforts in such global issues as the environment, energy, medicine, poverty, etc.

Awards Conferred

Award of Excellence (1 recipient)
Incentive Award (a small number of recipients)
In principle, the above Awards will be granted to individuals, but in some cases groups will also be considered.


Applicants from Japan and the Asia-Pacific region who are around the age of 45 or younger.

Award Details

Award of Excellence: Award plaque accompanied by 1,000,000 yen
Incentive Award: Award plaque accompanied by 500,000 yen

Please submit the following documents (self-nomination)

1. Details about the Applicant

Full name, address, date of birth, nationality, curriculum vitae, place of employment, contact information (telephone, facsimile, e-mail).

2. Details about the Research or Activity A detailed description of the subject project in English (maximum 2,500 words) or Japanese (maximum 5,000 characters) to be accompanied by supporting evidence of the subject project .

3. Recommendations from two references.

Applications for the Award will be accepted by post, facsimile, or e-mail at the contact points below. Telephone inquiries will not be accepted.

3. Application Period
August 1, 2019 to January 31, 2020

Announcement of Awards and Award Ceremony

Awards will be announced in July 2020 and the results will be posted on the NPI website. The results will not be informed individually and telephone inquires will not be accepted.
